College has gotten me so used to email communications that I am having problems managing my phone calls.
After a lot of leaving each other voice messages, I finally talked to her on the phone today. I have never met her, but I am very interested in the non-profit organization she works at, and have been trying to connect with her to see if she can help me get involved in their work or give me some advice on how to find an interesting non-profit path like hers. It is a little sad to confirm that I won't be able to intern with them given my current schedule, but I will continue to work towards getting involved in non-profits in the city.
On a "more important" note, I started work today. I got rained on by a downpour of information, but that's okay since most of my now-colleagues have to re-learn the system along with me anyways. It's really interesting to get to know what happens behind the scenes after you order a piece of clothing from an online site, and figuring out how the ordering and inventory systems work is like working on puzzle set (or, even more fun, clicking around in statistical softwares) that it's intriguing though potentially tedious.
I started browsing some fashion blogs and shopping site after work, and they opened my eyes to a new world - or in more appropriate lingo, new lifestyle. I still have to work hard and guard myself against the very fashion-fetishism that created my job; if I choose, I can dive straight into this new lifestyle, and it wouldn't be a hard thing to do in this consumerism-flooded metropolitan. But from the bottom of my heart I still feel the yearning to do something for a broader purpose; for the betterment of a life other than your own; and to find a space in the city where self-gain and personal-ambition aren't the dominant language.
I hope my friend will be willing to draw an image of overgrowing roof gardens for my blog.
